Depending on how is the air extracted from the bag there are 2 types of external vacuum sealers:

  • Clamp type vacuum sealer
  • Retractable Nozzle vacuum sealer

They all do the same job they just do it in a different ways. What are the differences?

Clamp Type Vacuum Sealer

After you place the food in the bag you close it down and put it in the “mouth” of vacuum sealer and clamp it down. Vacuum sealer will than extract the air out and prepare it for storage. The deal with this type of sealing is that the vacuum sealer will need a lot of suction power to complete the job correctly, and most of the appliances won’t be able to do it right and will leave air bubbles. So to use this type of vacuum sealer you will need special bags with several layers of texture on the inside that will allow the air to be extracted a lot easier instead you will overwork your vacuum sealer on a single bag.

Retractable Nozzle Vacuum Sealer

Similar to a basic clamp style vacuum sealer this one also works on a similar mechanism. The advantage of this one is that it has a stronger suction power but it can retract liquid inside, which this one is mostly used only for solid and dry foods.

Options for Clamp style vacuum sealer

Clamp style vacuum sealers can come in variety of options. Unlike the cheaper versions some more expensive options can come with variety of options like Liquid deposition tray which can accumulate excess liquids. You can purchase additional attachments for removing air from jars and canisters. Those attachments can only be used on more expensive models. But when you see what they can offer it’s definitely good investment to be made.

You can see above that you have several options and models that you can go with. At the end of the day it all depends what your needs are. If you decide to go with a cheaper and less power model do not be surprised if you food doesn’t last as long as you wanted. You won’t be able to seal several types of food as well. Some models have options for attachments some don’t. Do your due diligence, before you go out and purchase one. If it’s more expensive than it is definitely good investment to be made in a long run. If you come across a a cheaper model that looks good on a paper do not run and buy it, remember if it sounds too good to be true than it probably is. If you are not that prone on using it every day you can go with a smaller model but still chose a quality one instead of cheap plastic one. It all depends what is the right external vacuum sealer for your needs.
